Competition in the telecommunication increases rapidly, including in Canada’s telecom. With recent regulation where customers can get usage-based billing for running internet is quite shocking customers.
Moreover, this plan will raise costs for customers who are often to use internet, especially for online video users. It means that there is no unlimited downloading anymore. CRTC introduces this pricing model not for calculating volume of data downloaded instead of total capacity which is needed by customers. This new approach is solely made to increase bandwidth usage where internet service providers have to recalculate their rate, so it will be more competitive. Of course, at the end customers can get the benefit since they can compare the cheapest rate.
On the other sides, OpenMedia.ca as online internet activist group said that it is a clever strategy to run this plan. On the contrary, TekSavvy as independent internet provide are disagree with this plan and called it a “step backward.”
Mirko Bibic as Bell’s senior vice-president for regulatory and government affairs is not so pleased with this issue since it will be good if the tariff has been one package and no additional charge for accessing its network. Independent ISPs must lease more traffic lanes for this purpose.
